ZANZIBAR

Officially Zanzibar is considered to be a Farsi word combination ZANGI + BAR, meaning BLACK + COAST (note that 'zangi' is 'black' in Kartvelian too).

But we will dare to give a hypothesis of our own, which implies ZANZIBAR being...

ZANZIB + AR

...'place of zanzib'. The AR suffix, as we remember, is a Svan toponymic morpheme meaning 'place of...'. While what 'zanzib' is, can be seen from the Kartvelian word ზანჯაბილი [zanjabili] meaning 'ginger'. Here '-ili' is suffix+ending, the root is 'zanjab'.

Does Zanzibar associate with ginger? Yes, it does:

"...Their <of Arabs and Persians> trade-links allowed them to make the first comparaive tasting, and so to distinguish between Chinese ginger - the original stock, the most expensive, and in their view still the best - and Zanzibar ginger, descended from the roots that had long ago been transplanted to Madagascar, the Comores and the east African coast...".
