This Western Ukrainian sub-ethnos has in its name the Kartvelian adjective UL-suffix, which enables us to present the name as a Kartvelian word 'gutsuli' and to search for the root's meaning.
Such a root exists indeed. It's 'gutsa' (გუწა), which has many meanings. Let's choose the most eloquent of them - 'hard work'. Thus, 'gutsuli' would mean 'hard-working' which is a very exact characteristic of Ukrainian mentality.
